The name "Monitor" is special to Polk Audio. The original Polk Audio Monitor Series, produced in the mid-1970s, ushered in the modern loudspeaker era by setting the standard for performance and value. The original Monitor Series is the line that made Polk Audio famous with its simple, sturdy construction, clear, accurate sound, powerful bass and superior imaging all at a price that made great sound available to everyone. The newly reborn Monitor Series is classic Polk: a quality-built, affordable line of high performance loudspeakers for music and home theater. They are highly efficient, so they can be driven easily by unpretentious receivers, and they are voice matched for lifelike surround sound environments. The Monitor Series boasts a stylish look that complements today's flat screen technology, with wood grain finishes and modern Titanium faces, and beefy stabilizer feet on the tower models. Built for speed, sound quality and value, the Monitor Series is a great introduction to high performance sound.

Summary: Great for the Price
Comment: I am very happy with these speakers. However, I am beginning to wish I had bought the Monitor 60's instead. I have an excellent subwoofer, and currently I do not have the Monitor 70's set to full band on my receiver. I crossed them over to the sub because I prefer the sub handle the bass. If this is how you are planning to set up your home theater then I would suggest getting the Monitor 60's instead. If your fronts aren't going to be set to full band then there is no need for a 3-way speaker. By getting the Monitor 60's you would save some money, and have one extra woofer handling the mids. If you are not getting a subwoofer then I suggest the Monitor 70's, however, in order to get a lot of bass out of them they would need more power then a normal A/V receiver can supply. If you get a stereo amp just for these, that would defeat the point of getting the monitor series of speakers as I consider this line a sort of bargain line in the home theater arena.

Summary: GREAT VALUE
Comment: Well I knew that when I upgraded my sound system I wanted Polk since i have had their products in my car for over 10 yrs with no problems. I also I wanted floorstanding speakers to avoid having a set of stands or small tables by the TV or drilling holes in the wall. Floorstanding options also open up for a larger variety of sounds.
I also wanted a full range of sound from deep lows to ear piercing highs and a nice smooth mid to blend everything. This was the speaker I found at less then $1000 each. The VM30 was out of my price range and the RTi and the TSi Series didn't offer subs mids and a tweeter I was looking for. This speaker offers all 3 which amazon does not note in the description. So I copied this right from Polk's website for everyone.
Driver Complement
Subwoofer 2 - 6-1/2" Diameter (16.51cm)
Dynamic Balance Bi-laminate composite cone drivers, magnetically shielded
Mid/Woofer 2 - 6-1/2" Diameter (16.51cm)
Dynamic Balance Bi-laminate composite cone drivers, magnetically shielded
Tweeter 1 - 1" Diameter (2.54cm)
Dynamic Balance Silk/polymer composite dome, magnetically shielded
I do not have them Bi amped because I want to have a 7.1 system for viewing blu rays. According to the manual if I have them bi amped I need to use the "back surround" out puts making my system back to a 5.1 system.
However these speakers alone are quite loud and I really feel as though I could go without a sub. Looks are great the silver and black matches a variety of electronics. Either with the grills on or off they will catch your eye. I couldn't be happier with my new speakers Highly recommended.

Summary: Deep bass
Comment: I've seen some reviewers question the adequacy of the Monitor 70's bass response. I have these speakers hooked up to a modestly powered Onkyo receiver, and I find the bass more than adequate for all types of music. I like a deep, rich bass in my tunes, and I have felt no need to attach a subwoofer to my system. In fact, I've turned the bass down a bit on my receiver to allow the midrange to shine through. As others have noted, the midrange and highs are crisp. Be aware the speaker is almost 16" deep, so it tends to stick out from the wall.

Summary: No better speaker for price
Comment: I purchased the Polk Audio Monitor 70 speakers 3 months ago.I use them for listening to 2 channel stereo. After listening to them extensively and considering what I paid for them,I should have felt like I was STEALING when I bought them. When paired with the right power source these are just unbeatable for the price. With the NAD C325BEE integrated amplifier these speakers put out an INCREDIBLE BASS response:clean, deep, powerful and tightly controlled, displaying great detail.Yes,DETAIL in the bass response. With this amp and Polk M70 speakers there is NO NEED for a sub-woofer.The mid-range is awesome and the high frequencies are crystal clear with no hint of harshness or stridency. After hooking these up to the new amplifier I was just FLOORED at the quality of the sound that leapt out at me.The human voice is reproduced faithfully with every sibilant and subtle expression captured. It sounds like the singer is in the room with you! These are beautifully balanced in tone and sound NATURAL.They sound crisp and have great punch if you have the power to push them properly. There are many speakers out there that cost much more that don't sound as good as these Polk's.These Polk speakers have been a revelation and I am tickled sonically pink.Want the most bang for your buck? BUY THESE!
